A Solar project that finalised last summer after a A Solar project that finalised last summer after a few years development:

‘British designer Samuel Wilkinson has unveiled a new Solar shelter project called E-cacia. The solar shelter is currently in a final development stage and will be produced in collaboration with US based solar start up Solarforma.
E-cacia is a 7m wide solar shelter that has minimal ground level impact, but still able to collect large amounts of solar energy. E-cacia’s irregular nonogan form has been derived from the shape of the African Acacia tree. They have wide flat canopies with very little lower vegetation so work perfectly for shade and shelter. The power generated can either be used locally or fed back into the grid.
E-cacia is a tool for placemaking that can work as a singular centre piece or in a series to create autonomous public areas. The shelter fits seamlessly into the urban environment and is perfect to create ample shaded areas for people congregate.’

Parallel is a minimal series of furniture made from thin strips of solid Teak. The series consists of a table, bench and chair. The collection was shown for the first time as part of an exhibition called ‘Slow hand design’ at Superstudio during the Salone del mobile 2022 in Milan.
The Parallel project was development on the back of a pre-pandemic Thai craft tour searching for skilled local partners. The pieces are a collaboration with local wood furniture manufacturer Deesawat, who are based just outside of Bangkok. The Teak is sourced from a local sustainable plantation and all pieces have a knockdown construction for shipping.

Starting from a simple 1:5 maquette in 2014, model on the right, to a 1:1 cardboard test to finalising the backrest curve in the Gemla factory. After completing initial 3d cad, which too much curvature to be viable, we had to simplify to make a 1:1 prototype in 2015.
The prototype was shown to Gemla in 2017 to start discussions and eventually be released at the start of this month in Milan. It was has taken huge amounts of effort and emotion, over many years, so very happy to final have it released! :)

Made from all natural materials, the Gemla OPEN is high back wooden lounge chair. The chair consists of two curved elements of steam bent timber pinned together by an solid wood seat frame. A sprung backrest is created from paper twine neatly weaved back and forth across the curved form. The open weave provides great support while also giving a nod to Gemla’s early history of manufacturing Tennis racquets, hence the name Gemla OPEN.

Often projects arrive in very different ways. Flute mirror was inspired from tests with the fluted borosilicate glass tube used in the Peacock lamp. After various attempts to get the tube to light uniformly from LED’s placed within the tube, we noticed that by placing the LED strip behind the tube and shine it through, the tube illumination is so much better. This method is perfect as provides quality light on the wall behind and soft light towards the user.

A mirror embracing modern and classic styles at the same time. Its minimal lines combined with classic proportions and modern details give life to a piece with strong yet silent features.
With a slim profile that hides its real depth, Flûte appears to float off the wall. The bevelled-mirror doors open to reveal a generous cupboard inside, offering ample space for most needs.
The name Flûte refers to the ribbed glass extrusions found above and below the mirror. The glass tubes provides warm, diffused lighting towards the user, while the intensity is stronger against the wall.

The collection is called ECHO. The name relates to the tonal colour effect used across the pattern. The central square dots are a visual representation of an echo, stronger in the centre then fading out and blending into the background
